Target Group: Doctoral researchers  

This session is offered in the context of the European Doctoral Day and is open to participants from YERUN, bringing together early-career researchers and prospective doctoral candidates from across Europe.

Focus:
Pursuing a PhD is a strategic career decision rather than a purely academic step. This session provides a concise, realistic overview of:

• - Career implications of doing a PhD in Germany
• - Transferable skills and employability within and beyond academia
• - Typical career paths (academic and non-academic)
• - Structural features of the German doctoral system relevant for career development

Objective:

• - Enable informed career decisions by clarifying expectations, risks, and opportunities associated with the PhD phase.

Q&A:

The session includes time for questions and discussion.

Psychologist and systemic coach; Consultant in the Academic Staff Development Unit, University of Konstanz. Longstanding experience as director of the Career Center at the Universität Hohenheim, career consultant and trainer for doctoral researchers, specialists and executive staff. Consultant at the “Büro für Berufsstrategie” in Stuttgart. Author of books about career development and application training for the publisher C.H. Beck. Lecturer at various universities, most recently at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, north-western Switzerland FHNW. Work area: career development for doctoral students.

Dipl.-Psych. Melanie Moosbuchner

Psychologist, Systemic coach; Consultant for Personnel Development and Career Advancement in Academic Staff Development at the University of Konstanz.

Main areas of work: coaching, advising, and organizing events on career alternatives outside academia; the certificate program “Leadership, Management, Science Communication and Knowledge Transfer”; team development for research groups; and leadership in academia. In addition, many years of professional experience in personnel development in business and society, with a focus on team development, leadership, and facilitation.
