Successful Leadership

Course type:   Workshop
Target Group: Junior research group leaders
                       and postdoctoral researchers

The success of good leaders is indicated by their staff’s willingness to perform well. Technical or functional know-how alone is not sufficient in this regard; methodical and personal skills are called for.

This workshop addresses junior research group leaders and postdoctoral researchers, who are responsible for leading and supervising PhD’s and TA’s and who wish to reflect on and enhance their leadership skills.

The workshop focuses on three main areas of leadership: First, we will work on the clarification and development of your leadership role. The aim is to recognize your creative freedom and to consciously take advantage of it as well as to establish clarity about both your own expectations and those of your research group members. An additional emphasis of the workshop is on communication and tools for directing professional discussions. The third key objective of the workshop is to show how these instruments can be applied to manage diversity aspects in teams such as the reconciliation of family and research, different cultural backgrounds as well as discontinuities because of labor turnover.
