Continuing your academic career in a new country always raises a lot of questions. The goal of this seminar is to give an overview of the German academic system as well as to provide you with the most important information on academic careers in Germany.

The seminar is divided into four thematic sessions which can be booked separately. The first session provides a general introduction to the German academic system and useful information on (support) structures at the University of Konstanz. In the second and third session, specific information on academic careers for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers will be offered. The fourth session targets options for external funding in Germany. This comprehensive information session will support your successful start in Germany.

Psychologist and systemic coach; Consultant in the Academic Staff Development Unit, University of Konstanz. Longstanding experience as director of the Career Center at the Universität Hohenheim, career consultant and trainer for doctoral researchers, specialists and executive staff. Consultant at the “Büro für Berufsstrategie” in Stuttgart. Author of books about career development and application training for the publisher C.H. Beck. Lecturer at various universities, most recently at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, north-western Switzerland FHNW. Work area: career development for doctoral students.

Mirjam Müller, M. A.

Historian and Slavist, Systemic Coach; Personnel developer with a focus on postdocs with the Academic Staff Development unit at the University of Konstanz. Longstanding experience in science management, e.g. as managing director of the Humboldt Graduate School at the Humboldt Universität Berlin, as spokeswoman for the Network for Staff Development at Universities, as a coach and trainer for academic careers. Author of several career guides for postdocs. Member of the Coachingnetz Wissenschaft e.V.. Certified success team leader after Barbara Sher, certified trainer for mindfulness in organizations (MIO). Work areas: career advancement for postdocs.

Annett Giebelhausen, M. A.

Historian; specialisations: Global History, Postcolonial Studies, American History.

Previously worked for several years as a project manager in the science department of the Robert Bosch Stiftung with a focus on research on sustainability, school and science, and science communication.

Main areas of work within the research support of the University of Konstanz: research infrastructures (core facilities), support in applying for third-party funding.

Sandra Gerspacher, M. A.

Advisor for researchers; Director of the Welcome Centre at the University of Konstanz. Work areas: advice on non-academic matters for international researchers, residence law for international researchers, connecting to other services inside and outside of the University of Konstanz, coordination German language courses, project management for the Philip-Schwartz initiative (at-risk researchers), quality management Welcome Centre.
