The Impostor Phenomenon

Course type: Online-Workshop
Target group: Postdoctoral researchers

In cooperation with the University of Hohenheim.

The impostor phenomenon describes the feeling of frequent self-doubt about one's own competence and achievements. Successes are interpreted more as a coincidence and not as a result of one's own performance. Behind this “not good enough” is often the fear or concern of being perceived as a “deceit”, i.e. of being exposed in one’s own supposed incompetence. The phenomenon is mainly described for high-performance people.

The aim of the workshop is to get to know the impostor phenomenon. To do this, we will look at the properties and various scientific explanations that promote its formation. In practical exercises we will look at your own biography of personal and professional development and identify hidden beliefs. We delve into why the impostor phenomenon is affecting more and more knowledge workers and what connections it has to mental health. Finally, we focus on strategies to work effectively against negative thoughts. In addition, we change our perspective on the role of managers and look at how we can address the impostor phenomenon among employees.

Workshop objectives:
- Know the impostor phenomenon and its properties
- Know explanations and development approaches
- Differentiation and comparisons to mental health
- Learning strategies to strengthen self-esteem and your own performance capability
